What's up with WhatsApp broadcast lists?

WhatsApp Broadcast Lists are a one-to-many communication

Broadcast lists are different not the same as a WhatsApp group. WhatsApp broadcast lists can be made on either Android or iOS.

When the FT launched a broadcast service using WhatsApp last year I was curious and went through the rather clunky "Sign Up" process: adding a number to WhatsApp contacts, sending a message to sign up, which gave the FT my phone number etc. It felt more like a hack, a better option would be to use a Telegram channel.

WhatsApp is clamping down on broadcast list use by business.

The FTs has recently closed down their WhatsApp service.
“Unfortunately this group will soon close. Thank you for following us and we hope you’ll continue to read our markets stories via other platforms.”
The FT said a change in policy by WhatsApp was behind the decision.

That doesn't seem to be widely understood, with the Edinburgh Evening News announcing the launch of their new WhatsApp list on exactly the same day.

If you're after a one-to-many broadcast service, which is public, free, easy for users to follow and supports an unlimited number of subscribers, take a look at Telegram channels.
