Nobody Uses GooglePlus - And why that's good!

"Nobody uses GooglePlus!" Is the response I often hear when mentioning that network.

What people actually mean is: nobody (I know) uses GooglePlus. But why would anyone go to a new-to-them different network and build the same network they have elsewhere? That would make no sense at all.

People originally went to Facebook and sought out "known people" - friends.

People needed to seek out known users on Facebook and more recently LinkedIn because both rely on requests to grow your network: "friend requests" and "connection requests" respectively. Such relatively closed "symmetrical networks" aren't very social. Traditionally one does not make new friends on Facebook or LinkedIn, what you do is you confirm relationships which already exist.

GooglePlus on the other hand is an open network, much more like Twitter: where you simply "follow" a profile. You do not need to make a request to do so; because following a profile does not give you access to anything non-public. After following a profile you will see their public posts in your home stream. If they choose to share non-public ontent with an audience which includes you then you would also see non-public as well as public content from them in your home stream.

Instead of feeling that you can't use GooglePlus because people you know do not use it, I would suggest that is a unique opportunity to build a very different type of home stream to other networks.

Use advanced search to find content that interests you. Use discover, follow recommended users or fine tune your stream by following specific topics which people post to collections: build a home stream filled with content that interests you. Oh and be nice too! You might even make some new friends.
