Follow people on Google Maps

If you are a Google Maps user you may have seen a "Follow" button on the occasional user profile already. Google have been toying with it for a while now, but it has not been more generally available.

To be honest it's not clear to me WHY people might want to follow other profiles on Google Maps. Unless that person was a recognised restaurant reviewer maybe?
