Three ways Telegram Groups differ from WhatsApp

Message groups are used for just about everything nowadays. Commonly for parent groups, clubs, hobby groups and much more. In every situation where potential members of the group are not already in your contacts WhatsApp has some serious issues. Here are the top three you should know about.

1: Names
It's obvious that when joining a message group, which contains people you might not already know, seeing a name displayed helps.

Telegram displays the name users have provided. WhatsApp does not.

2: Numbers
Both WhatsApp and Telegram require a phone number to sign up. Telegram however will not display your phone number to others by default: neither in the group chat or when a user looks at your profile.

When joining a WhatsApp group you are giving your phone number to every member of the group.

3: Choice
You are normally added to a WhatsApp group by a group admin: it may be implied that you can choose to leave afterwards, but you've lost the choice about giving away your phone number.

Telegram groups can be joined via a special link which can be circulated outside of the App. Join links be expired afterwards to prevent them from being overused, You have the choice of whether to join the group or not. Even if you are added manually by a group admin your phone number is not exposed in that process and you can choose to leave if you wish.


Your Bad Habit
It's habit that generally defines what people do. If you use WhatsApp habitually that is likely be what you will reach for when creating groups; it's hard to break a habit. But as message groups become more widely used it is worth considering what is best to use in any given situation.

Even if you are a dedicated WhatsApp user message groups with members who are not already closely acquainted are better on Telegram. It's worth taking a look.
